Joining Graeme for Brunch this Thursday:

Iain Morrison

For his new album To the Horizon, Sir Iain travelled to the studio home of producer & friend Michael Chorney (Hadestown Orchestra, Anais Mitchell, Dollar General, Justin Vernon, Ani Difranco) in the hills of Vermont USA where a bunch of new tracks were created. Iain and Michael were joined by musicians Geza Carr (drums) & Robinson Morse (double bass). The remainder of the songs were completed in Scotland with various musicians including long time collaborator and friend Pete Harvey (The Leg, Meursault) on cello.

Quick Facts:

  • Iain is from the Isle of Lewis, Scotland & is currently based in Glasgow.
  • He recently appeared on the BBC’s Transatlantic Sessions singing 3 of his own songs alongside the likes of Bela Fleck, Danny Thompson & Jerry Douglas.
  • He grew up listening to records his uncle passed on including: Neil Young, The Byrds & The Waterboys.
  • He sang the part of ‘Orpheus’ for Anais Mitchell’s Glasgow ‘Hadestown’ show.
  • He plays a number of instruments including guitar & various types of pipes.
  • At a young age he grew to love the classical music of the highland pipes (piobaireachd) which was taught to him by his father using a technique called canntaireachd!
  • In 2010 he was commissioned to write songs based on these ancient melodies by the Celtic Connections festival. The resulting show, ‘Ceol Mor/Little Music’, received a 5 star review from the Scotsman newspaper. These songs are yet to be recorded.
Samantha Horwill

Samantha Horwill

Samantha Horwill

Samantha Horwill is a South African born singer-songwriter whose gutsy, catchy modern folk is characterised by its strong melodies and candidly emotive lyrics. The power of Samantha’s compelling live performances is captured on her debut album Caught in the light, set to be released in late 2012.

Samantha was discovered at a South African festival belting out her self-penned tunes on a hay bale. She soon found success as the front lady of a rock outfit, accomplishing sets at national festivals and earning extensive media coverage. Despite the opportunity for a major label record deal, Samantha decided the time was right to take the leap to carve her own path as a solo artist.

Relocating to the United Kingdom provided the start for this new career, quickly resulting in the release of her debut solo EP Figure of 3. Staging persuasive live performances armed only with her guitar, or backed by her band, Samantha’s songs allowed her to tour extensively in the UK and in her native South Africa, sharing the stage with Ocean Colour Scene, Imogen Heap, VV Brown, Amy Studt, Polly Paulusma and Foy Vance.

Then, on Friday…

3RA

Brothers Phrase and Ly, along with long-term friend Davis form the R&B group 3RA. They are releasing their new single Starstruck on the new Let Go mixtape on 10 November. The single will appear alongside previous tracks Let Go (Originally produced by Labrinth and Re-produced by 3RA Music) and Speed Of Light.

3RA have had the close support from established names in the industry including Bubble & Scratch (Disturbing London), Jon Baker (GeeJam) and Bradley McIntosh (S Club 7), giving them a strong presence in the industry to kick start their journey to success.

After having the opportunity to wow audiences at prestigious venues like Proud Camden, 3RA’s loyal fan base is vastly growing throughout the UK and Worldwide. Their recognizable image favors the guys for comparison to fellow hip-hop group Rizzle Kicks, which relates to the huge roles that each member of the group takes. Davis’ crisp production technique compliments Ly’s flowing MC style and is finished off with Phrase laying down his mellow energizing hooks.

Sarah McQuaid

In conjunction with the recent release of her new album The Plum Tree and The Rose, England-based singer/songwriter/guitarist Sarah McQuaid is currently midway through an eight-week USA tour that will be followed immediately by a 23-show UK tour in November.

Released earlier this year on the Chicago-based Waterbug Records label, The Plum Tree and The Rose has drawn critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic. The UK’s fRoots (formerly Folk Roots) called it “impeccable”, Ireland’s Hot Press said it “should feature on many end-of-year best-ofs”, and Germany’s Folker wrote “Diese Frau hat Stil” (This lady’s got style). In the US, Seattle’s Victory Review hailed it as “truly profound and deeply emotive …. This is one for the keeping”, while Midwest Record described it as “low key but glorious and incendiary”.

The album was No. 3 on the Folk-DJ chart for March 2012, and by April was No. 5 on the Euro Americana Chart; in June, it reached No. 6 on the Roots Music Report Folk Top 50.

The youngsters will also create their own social action project focusing on something they really care about locally – before going on to deliver it alongside their teammates before the end of the year.

Maeve MacKinnonJoining Graeme on Brunch this Friday at 10am:

Maeve MacKinnon - Since the award-winning success of her 2007 debut album Don’t Sing Love Songs, the young Scottish singer Maeve MacKinnon has proved herself one of the most distinctively gifted artists on today’s UK folk scene – a reputation now set to rise still further with the release of her eagerly-anticipated follow-up, Once Upon an Olive Branch.

Singing in Gaelic, Scots and English, with a repertoire spanning traditional, contemporary and now original material, Maeve is renowned equally for the eloquent emotional connection she forges with every song, communicated in a bewitchingly honeyed, husky yet vibrantly earthy voice, and for her music’s dynamic interplay of boldness and sensitivity. It’s a combination that saw her voted Up and Coming Artist of the Year at the 2007 Scots Trad Music Awards, and Don’t Sing Love Songs showcased live as a Classic Album at Celtic Connections 2008.

Richard Street - Three time Grammy Award, two time American Music Award winner Richard Street is lead singer of The Temptations.

With all but one of the original members of the  Temptations having passed on, Richard presents the music of The Temptations in its original five man group format featuring all of The Temptations best-loved hits; Heavenly, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, Firefly, Hey Girl, Masterpiece, Every Time I Close My Eyes, I’ll Keep My Light In My Window, Super Star, Show Me Your Love, Bare Back, Standing On the Top, Papa Was a Rolling Stone and many more.
